Hey Maraya!

Thank you for joining for my roommate birthday party, it felt really good to have you there. Lets sleep over party sometime very soon.

Congratulations on your accountability list completion. Is that 3 total now? or 4? Soon we'll be taking a beautiful and breathtaking journey to the most fantastic and car accesible location possible. Side note: I'm still mulling over the gifting circle. Money and me. . . we have it rough. Give me a little more time. I'm digging your meta narrative, can't wait to see the next and the next and the next versions.

I finished my list too! I'd grade myself a B+, which is a huge improvement. Should we set up a blog for just us on our accountability lists? We could set it up so only you and I have access to it view and write it in. We'd have more of an organized record of our achievements. We could make a point to write a bit on each check off the list. It'd be more work, but I can see it as a potent self reflective tool that is different than a personal journal in it's singular purpose.

1. Rough out one painting of family series - Come to my studio sometimes and I'll show you what i'm twerking with.
2. Figure drawing session - saturday morning, 9-12, busty blonde nude
3. Call Anna - didn't answer but still arranged a lunch date
4. Call Josie - didn't answer i'll call her later
5. Read Asian Amer Chapters 3 - 5 - yes done did that, i think i'm really racist. i'm confused
6. 4 ink drawings - ink and water color drawings, felt really good getting into it
7. Buy Stretchers/Canvas for 1 more family painting - that shits expensive

ACCOUNTABILITY LIST 8/20-8/27

1. Life drawing session
2. 8 ink drawings
3. Print out a list of 5 residencies and 5 shows to apply for
4. Develop film
5. Finish becoming Asian book
6. Read Chapter 3 Baudrillard
7. Rough out all painting sketches (5-6)
8. Check in on residency
9. Daily meditation practice and diary card

Hey!

That sounds like a wonderful idea! So I have 2 weeks complete and you have 3 weeks? Is this right? I'm so proud of us doing this for a month. I don't know about you, but this has really put a fire under my ass and I feel great about all these tasks I accomplish on a regular basis. Time seems so much more finite now.

I finished my list this week! Barely, once again. I'm totally being a C+ lister right now. Abstaining from libations will definitely help and I found that anxiety I get from smoking puts in a right mind frame to totally feel Butler.

1. Work for Mom for 5hrs
Worked on Wednesday from 10:30-3:30

2. 10 hrs of drawing
Combination of sketching, life drawing session and still lives

3. Go to Life Drawing
Monday night at the Atlier in Temescal Oakland, kinda super lame, maybe I'll go back . .

4. Do 4 complete still life or landscape ink drawings
2 Laundromat drawings and 2 stillives

5. Read Becoming Asian American Chapter 2
Yep! 2nd Generations have it rough man, IDENTITY CRISIS GALORE. it's not just me.

6. Read Baudrillard Chapter 2
Yep! The consumer has no free will! Comsumerism is based on class and social status and the desire for both. And a whole bunch of stuff

7. Read Butler 47-78
Yep! Who create all this binaries? Were they always here? What does everyone else have to say about this? Also marriage is a homosexuality interaction. man on man all the way.

8. Stretch Canvas 40 x 40, now gotta prime!

Accountability round 5:
8/13 - 8/20

So I have a goal of completing the family series in 4 months, so that's 6-7 complete paintings ready to frame and show

1. Rough out one painting of family series
2. Figure drawing session
3. Call Anna
4. Call Josie
5. Read Asian Amer Chapters 3 - 5
6. 4 ink drawings
7. Buy Strechers/Canvas for 1 more family painting

4th List - Alyson

Hey Lovely Lady!

OK

Late List

1st!
I owe you $30, you owe me $60. I think we should keep the moneys seperate from other moneys so we not just paying eachother the same bills back and forth. Also I think for every week we do everything on our list we should get a quarter point towards a get off free pass.

And now my list!

1. Work for Mom for 5hrs
2. 10 hrs of drawing
3. Go to Life Drawing
4. Do 4 complete still life or landscape ink drawings
5. Read Becoming Asian American Chapter 2
6. Read Baudrillard Chapter 2
7. Read Butler 47-78
8. Stretch Canvas

OH BOY!

3rd List - alyson

Hey lady!
I'm glad you got everything done this past week. I slacked at the last minute. . . .ugh I didn't work 5 hours for my mom. I don't think I'll put that on the list again, it doesn't really enhance my life and its purely obligatory volunteer manual labor. Otherwise I got the rest done. I miss you and want to seeee you.
I'm on my phone so I'll email a done list later as well. I'm happy to see you getting your article out there!!

Hey Ken,

Here's the article!

I cut out some parts and included a bit towards the end about how the task at hand is not only to create more festivals, but to build sustainable systems of living with each other and the planet. Rhizomatic networks of communities all culminating in the great turning towards Festival Earth.
I also changed the line breaks into prose, which I think ultimately flows better.

Feel free to cut anything else out or move things around. If there is anything else I can do, please, let me know!

many thanks and much warmth,
maraya

Hi Maraya,

Glad you're up for preparing your article for Reality Sandwich! In general, RS articles are 1,500 - 2,500 words, but we're not strict about length. I think that dividing the piece into 3 sections is fine, if you want to keep that structure.

Look forward to seeing the finished revision.

cheers,

Ken

Hey Ken!

So great to meet you!!
I would definitely be up for making those edits and incorporating more about what comes next for festivals. How long do you think is an good length and do you feel that the three part division should be taken out entirely?

I'll get started right away and if you have any other feedback or suggestions I would love to hear them.

much warmth,
maraya

Thanks for making the connection, Nick!

Maraya, great to meet you! I agree with Nick. Your post would make an excellent article for Reality Sandwich. Would you be up for editing the 3 parts into a single article, removing the repetitions (like Victor Turner's 3 points, which appears twice), etc? Also, you might consider including some of the feedback you've received from readers since the post first appeared, particularly regarding "what comes next" for festivals in order for them to grow and develop as you discuss.

Let me know what you think.

cheers,

Ken

Hey Ken,

I want to suggest a piece for Reality Sandwich called "The End of Festivals, the Beginning of Festival Earth" by Maraya Karena. I met Maraya last year in Evolver Boulder. She has both first-hard experience at a variety of transformational festivals, and also a background in cyborg anthropology focusing on rituals and rites of passage.

Maraya has posted the article as a public note on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/notes/maraya-karena/the-end-of-festivals-the-beginning-of-festival-earth/10151728403952884

It's a diversity voice in the buzzing festival season, for sure. It brings into question whether these events are achieving their said purpose, and looks for ways to do that more.

I'm CC'ing her in this message, in case the two of you haven't met. I'm sure she'd make a valuable contributor to RS.

I hope all is well on your end.

Warmly,
Nick
